The tripund tilak is a symbol made up of three horizontal lines traditionally worn on the forehead of devotees of Adiyogi Shiva (the first yogi.) The lines represent the three audible syllables of OM (A-U-M), the three Guṇas (Sattva, Rajas and Tamas), the three worlds (physical, subtle, and causal), and the three acts of Shiva (creation, sustenance, transformation). The ashes used to create the lines on the forehead symbolize the destruction of the ego in order to reach the divine or spiritual. The dot in the center represents both the third eye, and the divine feminine, or Shakti.
